Top 10 Expert Ways to Store Your Personal Items

Do you notice how much items you’ve accumulated as the years go by? I have too much stuff, some are not mine, but somehow ended up in my possession and became my responsibility. Whatever the case might be for you, it could be time that you take control of these items. One of the best ideas my significant other gave me about gaining control of my "way too much stuff" was to put some of these items into a storage facility. It made so much sense that I made a list of to-dos to tackle this project right away.

1) Determine which items can be stored. First and far most, you need to determine all the items that you can store. How to determine which items are good for the storage? Those items are usually things you can live without for a certain amount of time. It is also important that you have an idea of how much storage material you have, because the amount of items will determine the cost and size of the storage space you will need.

2) Storable materials. Once you have the items in mind, do consider the material of these items. Can they hold-up in the storage facility?  And can the facility that you've chosen hold-up your items? At the same time of accessing these items, you will need to determine how you will package the items for storage. For example: some items will need wraps on them, while others, might need to be stored in boxes so that you will not have to deal with dust or fading.

3) Ideal site. You will need to figure out the ideal site / location where your items will be stored. Whether you’re storing personal or business items, the storage facility’s location should be convenient for you. Ideally the storage facility is either close to your home, and or close to where you frequent, especially, if you are going to be accessing your storage items now and then.

4) Lowest price. Compare prices from different storage locations and make sure you chose the best price for the space you are acquiring. Ask the storage facility about the different sizes and length of time, as the prices might vary in terms of payments. You might also want to consider the different types of payment available, some places offer an installment plan, while others might give you a break for paying in advance. Do ask about all the payment options.

 5) Toss them out. It is amazing what you will find as you clean. While you are determining which items to store, also be realistic about the whether you should keep them or not. Ask yourself if you truly need, want, or will ever use the items again? If you are hesitant, maybe it is time to evaluate their purpose and toss them out!

6) Security for yourself as well as your items. Security is an extremely important factor. Remember that you will be going into the facility at times by yourself. How safe is the storage facility? You don't want to be beat-up or attack by anyone while trying to get your stuff out. The things you are storing are valuable to you too, so why wouldn’t you want it to be safe? Not only security is important for your items, but also for well being.

7) Insurance. You never know what kinds of things could happen, or who would be responsible in a disaster. That is why insurance is important as well. There are such things that could happen called natural disasters or accidents. Locate and secure insurance for your items, and "never say never." You want a peace of mind, and comfort once you've placed the items into a storage facility.

8) Transporting your items. Does your storage facility offer transportation for your items? After all, you're probably need some help in getting the items out of your house and into the storage space once you know which items are going to be stored.

9) Make money from your cleared-out space. An idea that I've just learned from Lok'nStore is that you can make money while storing your items in a storage facility. The idea is that the space, or room you will gain back from moving your items into storage will become available once you've cleared them out of your house. So why not find a renter or lodger for the empty space? You can make extra money with the prime real estate that is currently being wasted by these unused items.

10) Space estimator. Another helpful hint in which you should consider is getting help from a space estimator. A great storage facility will have help, or people who are experts in the field to help you with the size that you would need. Because they are experienced in what they do and can help you maximize the use of your storage space. You will save money with their expertise based on recommendations of where to place your items for easy access, as well as maximize the storage space based on the placement of your items.
