How to Choose the Right Flowers for Mother's Day

How to Choose the Right Flowers for Mother's Day

It is easy to think that buying flowers for Mother's Day is just a matter of picking out a bunch of beautiful flowers and presenting them to your mum. But there's much more to buying  flowers for your mother if you really wanted to impress her. Read on to discover how you could choose the perfect flowers for Mother’s Day.

  • Back to basics: what are her favorites? A good starting point is to think about what your mum's favorite flowers and/or colors are. Considering her likes and dislikes will show that you've put a little thought into picking the ideal bouquet. It is easy if you know your mother likes, say, pale pink roses, but perhaps much harder when she favors daisies and her favorite color is purple! You'll need to compromise if you find yourself in this situation. Either choose to go with her favorite flower (ideally one that's in season) or the color she likes best. Luckily, there are many species of flowers that come in a wide range of shades, such as roses and carnations. Another preference you may want to bear in mind is scent. If you know she likes the smell of roses you can't really go wrong. However, be cautious as there are many different varieties of aromas like citrus, spicy and exotic.

  • Will the flowers complement her home? This might seem like a minor issue, but it's always nice to choose flowers that will go with the decor in your mother's home. Think about where she normally puts flowers - for example, does she put them on full display in the living room or tucked away in the bedroom? Don't forget to consider how much space she has too. There's little point in buying a huge bouquet if it realistically can't fit on the sideboard, for example. It may also be a nice gesture to buy a vase that goes with both your flowers and the room they will be placed in. Extra presents are always a bonus!

  • Where will you give her the flowers? Again, this is easily overlooked, but it's perhaps not very practical to present your mum with a large bunch of flowers if you're meeting her away from her home (unless she's getting a lift back!). Try to give her yhe flowers at her home, or choose a smaller bouquet that's easy to carry if you're treating her to a meal or day out. If you want the flowers to be a complete surprise or won't be able to see your mother in person on the day, go online to find flowers for delivery

  • How long will they last? A little care and attention is usually all that's needed to make a lovely bunch of flowers last for as long as possible, but some varieties will inevitably live longer than others. You'll want to give flowers that make your mum smile for a while, so speak to your florist about choosing blooms that will stay fresh-looking for a good period of time.

  • Are flowers enough? Finally, you might want to think about investing in some extra presents to go with the gorgeous bouquet you've picked out as a nice surprise. As well as vases as mentioned above, chocolates, wine, champagne and luxury toiletries are all popular options that can't fail to impress. You could also consider getting a decent photo of you and your mum framed and possibly personalized for a more sentimental gift, or buying vouchers for a pampering spa day.

It is said that the flowers below have traditionally been Mother's Day's favorites, and were most popular to give. You can't go wrong sticking with one of the flowers below.
CARNATIONS: Carnations might be the most traditional Mother's Day flower. Each Carnation color represents certain feelings, so be sure you've thought about what they mean too. Here is the reminder: Pink carnations represent gratitude and love, Red carnations signify admiration, White carnations are traditional flowers to give or wear in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.
ROSES: Roses of various colors convey a number of different meanings as well. A bouquet of mature rose blooms sends a message of gratitude. In white roses signify virtue, purity, and reverence. Yellow roses bespeak devotion. A rose symbolizes grace in a medium pink hue, gratitude in a dark pink color, and youthful joy in light pink.
SUNFLOWERS AND GERBERA DAISIES: A bright and cheerful flower, the sunflower is a colorful addition to a bouquet. It also sends a message of adoration and respect. Gerbera daisies have a similarly joyful look in their myriad colors. Daisies are traditionally a symbol of beauty, and gerbera daisies also signify cheerfulness and playfulness.
TULIPS: The message of tulips in general is love. More specifically, pink tulips signify caring and red tulips connote true love. Yellow tulips bring a message of cheerful thoughts.
VIOLETS: Violets signify faithfulness and devotion. The gift of a violet plant can provide a lasting reminder of your appreciation for a mother's devotion.
ORCHIDS: With their exotic and majestic appearance, orchids symbolize love, refinement, and beauty. The orchid is also a Chinese symbol for "many children."
LILIES: Particularly beloved by many mothers, lilies come in a number of different varieties. A white lily connotes purity and majesty. The day lily is a Chinese symbol for motherhood. Calla lilies stand for beauty.

    17. Love flowers so much that I painted 12 canvases of 24 x 24 inches with individual flowers:) Rather than what message they may send (and I guess that's for everyone different:flowers mean to me:home, because I come originally from Holland. Roses mean to me: extravagant, etc.) my flower paintings I painted with a personality. If you like to see what I mean, I posted some of them on my artblog http://JeshPleinAirOils.blogspot.com
