Thursday Two Question #89 - PayPal Unauthorized Transaction

Password Dilemma

I have a couple of pages of passwords and log-ins for all the sites and accounts that I own. Some folks I know said they use the same password for everything.  I found out today it is a NO, NO. Even if I wanted to use the same password, I can't. Some sites have very strict requirements and criteria. Like creating unique, 7, 8, 9 characters passwords, and remembering them. Depending on the ask, it could become a huge a dilemma in our lives.

Unauthorized Transaction
For sites such as PayPal, you should use a password that isn't used anywhere else, a password that is dedicated to that site only. Why? Because there are key-loggers that sit around and steal your password, then will try to go into your PayPal account with it.

Another lesson learned today. For any site that is vulnerable to your identity, finance, you need to be more cautious with the password and what type of password. Guess what I spent my morning doing? On the phone with PayPal's fraud department to report the unauthorized transaction. The transaction was made to someone in Russia, is currently being investigated.

Password Storing
I haven't figured out how and where to keep all of my passwords. It's hard to remember all of them on the fly, and it is scary to keep them stored anywhere that goes through the internet. If you have an email account, that is how they will get your log-in ID, but I still don't know where my password was stolen from, and which website I was on.

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #89:
1)  Do you use the same password for everything? If you are, make sure to change the finance ones.
2)  Do you have to refer to your password list every time, or do you memorize all of them?

  1. I agree this is a huge pain! I also have so many passwords, and I can never keep track of them. I can't wait until technology improves and becomes more affordable so we can have something like iris recognition on all our devices, so we don't have to type passwords in any more.

  2. Changing password conundrum, I can't even get into my own email accounts I've forgotten passwords etc for, cuz it shuts down after too many tries but for the pros apparently Paypal is a piece of cake.

  3. Most of my accounts have the same passwords and I have them store offline.

I look at it when needed too.

  4. Sorry to hear about your trouble with unauthorized transaction. PayPal is good, it will solve the problem.

As for passwords, I need to change everything NOW!

  5. Amanda, I am sure paypal will sort this out but I know what a big hassle it can be. I have different passwords for some things such as paypal and I get kind of frustrated trying to keep them all straight. Blogger made me change mine the other day and it threw me for a loop. We have 3 different ones at work and have to change them every 30 days. It drives me nuts!

  6. Hi Amanda ~~ It is a dilema. I do a no-no by not having too many passwords. Or there are several with variations. I have credit cards with pins that I don't even know anymore.

I sometimes carry a list but generally I disguise them so that even I don't know what they are and if I did, to what it belonged. And every time that Norton crashes I really have problems.

Only my Yahoo e-mail account has ever been hacked that I know of. Cross my fingers and say 'for now.'
Thanks for doing this meme. :) It is a fun one. And please don't worry too much about the Pay Pal. From all I have heard they always make good. They have a slush fund for that out of the charges they assess.

  7. Oh Amanda, I am sorry to hear about your problem with PP. They will get it straightened out, PP is very efficient.

I use a lot of different passwords and change the financial ones often. I keep a list beside my computer.

The sites I access on my phone are ones I visit often enough to remember the passwords, like Blogger or my email accounts.

  8. Ooh, I lost track of my accounts and passwords all the time. So now I have them written down in my notebook. I have to look them up when I sign in. It's a huge pain.

Hopefully, PayPal can sort it out for you! That's suck when things like this happened. Thai has this happened last month to him. It's such a mess.

  9. No, I don't have a universal password. This would simplify things, but I know it would be terribly risky.

I do have to check with a my password list from time to time because sometimes my brain just doesn't want to recall it for a given site. lol. Is this age or just too many passwords? I'd like to think it's the latter. =D

    Thanks for hosting!

  10. I have several passwords since some sites won't accept my very long password :)

I usually have the same password for non-important sites such as facebook, etc

but anything that has "financial" aspect to it, has different password, I store them somewhere where I am hoping only I know :)

hopefully, paypal can sort things out for you.

  11. I use a special sequence to create specific passwords for each website. I too have a different password for just paypal. Hope that our paypal issue clears up.

  12. I have several key passwords depending on how secure the site is.
Sometimes, I do have to refer to a master list.

    Thanks for inviting me.

    Have a great Thursday!

  13. I hope your account get sorted out and you get your money back. That is scary. I have only one password for my finance accounts and they are for that account only. I don't log them anywhere so I better remember or I'll have to call the banks.

Some sites I use the same passwords because that is low level to me.

Others I store with easy password fill in. But i do try to be careful as careful as one can be on the internet.

  14. I'm sorry to hear what happened to you! I am constantly forgetting accounts and passwords - if I don't use it these days, I lose it fast!

Hope you get everything fixed fast and find a good safe solution for this problem!

  15. No way. I didn't know this could happen. I've verified my paypal account and thought it was air tight. They even got my money back from someone I paid to do a job when he didn't complete it.

I do have different passwords. I memorise them because I have a system that works for me.

  16. I'm hosting a giveaway over at my blog and would love for you to stop by and participate.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
