So after last week's PayPal Unauthorized Transaction incident, I decided to investigate in the tools to help me manage my passwords storing. At this point I need industrial vices to lock-up these passwords. It didn't take very long to find out about KeePass, an application that stores your password on a database. It is a popular program and it is FREE. It comes with enough bells and whistles to customized to your liking. You have a choice whether or not to use a master keyword. The KeePass application can be downloaded and run on your computer. There is also the portable version which can be kept in your DropBox or USB drive. I am currently trying it out, and it's simple and straight to the point. Of course if you want to use it for other purposes and business use, it can also be done. The more in-depth you go with the application, the more options you will have to define the usage that suits what you need.
- KeePass uses one master key word to protect all the other unique passwords.
- KeePass can auto generate unique passwords.
- The tool is FREE, you can try and see if it will work for your lifestyle.
- KeePass acts like a database on the go, but protected with your master keyword lock.
- KeePass will auto-fill the login ID and password with information you stored.

No. Because the database is protected by your "1 main" password, and not stored on the database itself. It is usally a 20 character password = recommended, so unless they can crack the password, they can't get to your other files.

DeleteI don't use a tool, but I certainly changed my paypal password after your post and my bank makes me change my password there every couple of months plus they require a unique pass code which they text you every time before you log in. Your tool sounds good. I may look into it.
ReplyDeleteChanging the password is a real pain you know, especially those unique PWs, sometimes I go crazy trying to think of a password and characters that I can remember.

They can't get it unless they know your master password which should not be stored on your data list. It's should be something very close to you, and in memory if possible. Fearing the list gets into the wrong hands would be for our computers, and everything that we have stored as well. So there will always be that fear....
DeleteRight now my passwords are on a page on the bulletin board next to my computer which isn't the best solution. I am always open to suggestions.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good solution. I'm not sure if I would want to store my passwords on my computer since any password can be cracked with the right program. I don't even trust my virus program with my passwords. Maybe on a flash drive.

Yes, that is what it does. A data base for you to organize and store all your password. It is very convenient especially the part that autofills your password and log in! Ah, what service!
