It’s amazing, but we are already in May! I am just catching my breath after finishing major paperwork projects! Now it’s just a matter of keeping up with what’s due. It’s so nice to finally say bye-bye to these wet and leafless trees, where the sun and warmth are now giving them beautiful blossoms and greenery. These pictures are from one of our neighborhood parks and at San Jose University campus.
I remember the first time going to SJU to get Miss T registered for the Preschool Lab, I was given the most awful directions ever. Although I must admit, I am very directionally challenged, but also very observant - and that has saved my butt many times.
The difference this time is that the directions were given to me by a veteran employee, she has worked there for over thirty years, and thought everyone should know where everything is and it is just so obvious. I listened to her directions, and was a little skeptical about finding our meeting location, however, because she assured me: “it’s very obvious, you will see it immediately.”
Oh-mi-gosh! It was not obvious, no one would guess Seventh Street was divided by a campus and continued on the other side - only for a block! And South, North - what? For someone who has never been there, nothing is ever obvious, but, I trusted from the way she sounded like there will be a huge red sign that said "I am here, come in"! Not. I wasn’t familiar with the University, so everything looked the same and there should be signs directing you to the buildings like the corporate world right? No.
Long story short, it took me three phone calls to her, and a forty-five-minute walk across the entire campus and still couldn’t find her. No one on the campus knew what and where the place was, no one on the same path as me has ever heard of it!
So you see, when giving directions to someone who is coming for the first time, especially directionally challenged, make sure you are kind enough to understand, what you see everyday for the last thirty years might have been taken for granted and compressed in a way that isn’t so obvious to another person. ReplyDeleteHahaha, I am very poor with coordinates if I am in a big place. I easily get lost. But I am good in travel directions, I mastered the Thomas Guide.

An interesting post for today. I am kinda like the other person. I know where and how to go, pay no attention to street names, just go. Then when I am asked for directions, I cannot tell anyone. You seem to be someone that can find her way alone if need be.

LV, yes I found my way eventually, it just takes more effort getting lost is all.
I am THE WORST with directions...and my husband always says "go north" WHAT??? Are you kidding me?? Is that right or left? Talk to me like I am 5! haha
ReplyDeleteNice collage! Lucky for me, I am pretty good at directions and once I have been somewhere, I can always find it again. I have a pretty good sense of direction and if I start to veer off course, I am able to get back on track without a lot of wasted time or gas. My younger son is like me in that regard but not my oldest. I bought him a GPS for Christmas!

ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on this. I hate it when people give directions without taking for granted that I haven't been to their place of business before. I ran into a lot of these problems when I first moved to Columbus, Georgia. It can get pretty annoying. lol
