What Recognized Days Should Be Holidays?

President's Day is a holiday to some people as they get the day off, not for me. Not sure where or how it got started that some businesses adapted the holiday and some don't.

There are some recognized days on the calendar that are not holidays, for example: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Secretary Day, etc.

The days I wished would become holidays are Mother and Father's Day. I think those days rank higher on my list than Presidents' Day. But because President's Day serves the country, the country can pretty much write a holiday when they want to.

As I look at the Holiday schedule (2012) for work, there is a big gap between New Year holiday and the and the next holiday,  Memorial Day. Yes, after New Year the next holiday should be Valentine's then Easter. But that's wishful thinking.

Then there are Holidays I think should be banned, especially, the holidays that my work don't recognize. It a selfish reason but think about it, if it's call a holiday and I am still laboring, then it definitely isn't a holiday for me. So it might as well be a regular day. Right?

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #74:
1) Do you have a recognized day in mind (like Mother's Day or Father's Day, etc) that you think should be a Holiday (day off from work)?

2) Do you have a Holiday in mind that you think we should banned?

  3. I know what I am thinking is a religious holiday, so probably will not be pushed through, but I wish the Good Friday is a holiday, thankfully, at school, we are allowed to take religious holidays as day-off. but what i do not like with it is I have to make lesson plan for the substitute. I am glad for the holidays, right now, I can't think of any I want to ban :)

    1. Yes, I hear you, we can use all the holidays off we can get. Who would want to ban a holiday. Good Friday is a good day to have off, as some people do take it off now anyways. smiles.

  4. Nice post, S.S. ~~ Funny but our granddaughter just complained that Valentine's Day was not a holiday. She wanted to be out of school for that day.

But I think the kids have more fun in school with the organized Valentine's Day parties than they would at home watching TV or playing with their X Boxes.

What the hey, let's all vote for Valentine's Day.

I say the more the merrier!
But let us keep the banks open on these holidays. The Post Office too.

    1. There you go! I agree, the banks and the post office should not have these days off, I mean, come on! When I am off, they are off too, so how can I get my errands done?

    1. I love to have mother's day off, it is such a huge day for women, and I totally agree, we'll keep all the holidays and make more...smiles.

  6. I think Sweetest Day should be banned since we already celebrate Valentine's Day.

Those other celebrated days are just made up to please people, but they are very catching and everyone joins in to make it bigger every year.

  7. Mother's Day and Father's Day are recognized as a holiday in the USA, but these occasions fall on a Sunday. I'm not sure if either of these warrant special time off from work, though. lol I think it's nice when the family pitches in to make these days work-free for the parents, though.

I can't think of a holiday that needs to be banned. The only thing is, it bothers when someone gets offended by Christian holidays and makes a stink about it. I'm not offended by other religions. This is a free country. I simply expect the same courtesy extended to Christians. =D

    1. Ah ha! I get your point about religious holidays. There are just so many religions that it will be hard to approve one and not another. man...

  8. Aww so sad to know you won't have holidays for a long time.
I think Trindad and Tobago has enough holidays. In fact, we are probably the only country with so many holidays especially in June.
I love the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday because it's the end of our fast and we get to feed people who are less fortunate than ourselves. Most of share right through the year but there are special baraqah (blessings) for us during the fast and the day we break our fast.
As for banning holidays here in my country, I tend to keep it personal and in mind :-P

    1. I will keep the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday in mind because I too love holidays with meaning and things we can do for the less fortunate.

  9. And here I was thinking we have too many holidays :) I love the idea of siestas though.

    1. I think Mardi Gras holiday should be banned. If people want to celebrate beads, then do it on the weekends. Don't stop my kids schoolfor that.

    2. I think Veteran's day should be a recognized holiday here...well maybe it's Memorial Day...but one of those federal holidays aren't celebrated here in LA and mardi gras is a holiday. bah.

I mixed up my Qs. lol

    Off to visit the others.

    Have a great weekendd!

    1. I remember from being in LA that Mardi Gras could be a huge nuisance, besides all the great stuff it brings. We have to close the stores early. People come in to use the restrooms. The streets got trashed due to the parades and drinkers.
I agree with both your comments.

  10. I don't think that any holidays should be banned - I don't think people get enough time off in our workaholic society!

I love holidays so I'm up for celebrating most things - but I always thought that the week between Christmas and New Year's should be a holiday! I mean really - who works during that period anyway? Shut down and let people enjoy time off with their families and come back renewed during the new year!

    Have a fabulous weekend!
