Should School Start After Labor Day?

I am early for Labor Day, which never happens. Like I always say, my blog lives in the past, it recalls things that I have done, not things that I will do. Well maybe some wishes and dreams, which are just words, not something that I will do.

I know a lot of moms would say they would prefer that school starts after Labor Day. I can remember when I was in school, first day back in fall was always after Labor Day. I guess if given the choice I would like school to start after Labor Day as well. We live in a sunny state and it would be nice to have more summer time with my kids.
The bad part about that is the kids will have to stay in school longer...in June. So far school districts have not been able to move away from June as graduation dates. No matter how early they tried to get off in June, it is still June.

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #150

  1. 1. I think they should start after Labor Day which would give them a longer Summer.

    2. Out here in SF, they actually started a couple of weeks ago, and the kids do not look too happy :)

    1. Public schools now have a great school year calendar. It seemed like they have a day or two off every couple of weeks.

  2. I think school should start after Labor Day. That's when we always went back to school as kids and I would often begin our homeschool year after Labor Day, too. Unfortunately, our school system usually begins mid August. That's just insane! Oh well, have a safe & happy holiday weekend, my friend.

    1. I think it was the same way where I grew up. The summer seemed longer just by pushing the first day of school out to Sept.

  3. Our school office has always started after Labor Day, and it made sense to me as the kids don't have to go back to school for a couple of days and then get off again. This will make consistency work much better once they are back in school.

    1. True, the couple of days before the holiday is ridiculous. I agree that it should be after the short one day break.

  4. I agree about the blog being a teller of events past :) I prefer it that way anyway...or a mixture.

I am used to school beginning in September in my country, so yes. I prefer September.
I also prefer if school was broken up into two week holidays instead of such a long summer off.

    Happy Friday!

    1. Blog is only as spontaneous as the blogger. Being able to stay on top of things all the time means you are blogging or working all the time.

  5. I agree about it being nice to start after Labor Day. However, I would actually like to see year round school here with little breaks here and there. I don't like the kids having an entire summer off. Boredom sets in and they forget a lot of what they learned, then have to relearn it when they go back.

My kids went back last Wednesday. My nephew went back at the beginning of August, which I though was way too early.

    1. year round school is a great idea. I think it should be year round as well, then maybe we should have at least two weeks of time off around the holidays.
