The New Penny - Thursday Two Questions #117

I don't like carrying coins in my purse. I don't even like to carry cash, if I could use my credit card for everything, anywhere, I wouldn't even have a purse. I like to be very light on the go. Carrying coins in your wallet is like carrying bricks, after a few accumulated, my purse feel like a ton of bricks! To be honest, I don't like using coins period. If I get change, I bring them home and empty them into a jar, or a piggy bank. When I get enough of them, I make trip to the bank and cash them in, it is a once a year trip.

I didn't want to come off sounding like a dumb brunette, but sometimes I think I live in my own world. Only last week, did I see a new penny! After acclaiming it to SO, he said it has been out for a while. How long of a while is for me to find out. And I did, it has been out since February 11, 2010! Yes, two years later, I finally saw for the first time a new penny. I thought, gees, this would be a great blog subject, but what will my readers think of me? Well, as you can see, I am quite sensitive about it (haha) and have gone through great lengths - whole first paragraph- to cover up my idiosyncrasy.

My SO once in a while put coins in his pocket, and jingles them. It is what he does, and he thinks nothing of it, while I am freaked and wonders why someone would want to load up their pants with so much weight?

  1. don't worry, we are very much the same! I do not carry coins and I hate coins, for the same reason, so much weight, and I think I am wasting a small fraction of money! Those coins could have gain interest everyday if they were not drawn out, hahaha! Frankly, I have not gone to the bank yet to exchange my coins, I have 4 big bottles of coins for penny, dime, nickel and quarters, and they are so heavy to carry now, and I wonder when I will ever get inspired to bring them to the bank! only that there are still a few establishments that do not accept credit card, I avoid them, but some can't be avoided :(

    1. Okay, so you have busted me. I "don't" really make the trip to the bank once a year. It is more like when I get so sick of seeing them laying around. And sometimes I hide the coins so that I don't have to see them. LOL

  2. I don't like change in my purse either. When I get change, I put it in my pocked then empty it out in a glass container at home. When it gets full, I roll up the change and take it to the bank.

I NEVER give loose change to a cashier because I know what it's like to have to count change from a customer when you have a huge line to take care of. Sometimes I will pay for my $2.00 coffee with quarters but that's as far as I go :)

    1. I am glad you're not the lady that holds up the line to count the coins to the cashier...smiles. Sometimes the cashiers are not used to getting coins anymore to the point, they don't know how to calculate the return change. So you are doing them a favor. smiles.

  3. Amanda, my purse weighs 7 pounds. My doctor weighed it after lifting it. lol I count out change, but with my eyes a penny changing it's looks would totally elude my scrutiny, so don't worry. Your secret is safe with me.

I worked for years in retail and would have to go to the bank to carry those heavy coin rolls back to the store so I loved when a customer would give me change. It doesn't take long to count, as long as it isn't all in pennies. lol

    1. Seven pounds is a lot of weight. I would have bruises on my shoulders. You brought up a very good point, perhaps I have seen it before, but because my eyesight is getting old, I didn't realized....that could be it. smiles.

  4. Amanda, we are two peas in a pod going into your two questions.

I DO NOT LIKE to carry change. As soon as I get home I dump my change. That is if it all hasn't fallen out of my pocket.

If I have change I try to get rid of it by giving it to the cashier. And yes, I count it for her/him.

I used to carry a squeeze change purse to keep from losing my change. But I really don't like to carry a bunch of stuff in my pocket. I will be glad when more men are carrying purses. A.k.a. 'man bags.'

    1. I think men to need menbags! Very good subject for the next T2Q! Gees, I have my reasons why they should have one. Yes, I think change is something we can all do without, and might very soon be, once the world is used to using more credit cards and debit cards, and cell phone bars, we might not have to anymore!

  5. I'm with you, I don't like to carry change either but I always seem to have some in my purse. If I do have change I will count it out to a clerk to get rid of it.

  6. I don't like to carry coins in my purse, and I only count small changes to give to the cashier...all under 50 cents mark..I don't like holding up the line or making other wait!

  7. I do have a small amount of coins in my purse, but I'm like you. I prefer to pay with plastic over cash. However, if I do pay with cash then I will look for the exact change just to unload what I can. Thanks for hosting T2Q! My post is now live.

  8. I always carry coins because they truly come in handy. My coin purse is very heavy specially when I go out and use public transpo. I never put my coins in my pocket because I usually use tight jeans so putting coins inside my pocket won't really look that good..hihi
I hate counting change before I give it to the cashier because it's time consuming. ;)

  9. I hate change. Just hate it! I get so excited about these Salvation Army bell ringers this time of year. My daughter loves dropping money in their buckets and I love getting rid of all the weight in my purse. Especially for a good cause too!

  10. Would it make you feel better that I did not know about the new penny either until I read your post?

I like having some change in my purse because I like being able to give exact change when I pay so that I can get back even dollar bills whenever possible. I hate getting back a handful of change at the cash register!

Which, I guess, answers your second question as well!

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Oh my gosh, yes! It does make me feel better knowing that someone isn't perfectly in tune with everything in the world.

  11. We have to carry coins here in India if you have to buy things! There is a problem of loose change always plaguing the market!!

    1. Wow. When we were in VN, my mother used to say how change could make us sick, and now I realized how true it is that you shared about India! Thanks for your comment.
