Stark-Naked Corn? Thursday Two Questions #104

File:Maize plant corn diagram.svg

I have a couple of questions for you again, of course. This summer I was able to buy corn very cheap, at times, six for $.96! It worked out to be about $.16 each. How cheap is that? How cheap was corn where you live?

It was one of those things, like peeling bananas. I asked SO to help prepare the corns for boiling. The task consisted of:
1) peel-off the leaves (ears), break-off the bottom part  (stem), and cut-off the mustache (silks).

We went on with our tasks until I glanced over to check-out SO. To my surprise, or shock, all the corns were stark-naked. As I come to understand, he has always seen his family peeled all of the ears off - all the way...stark-naked corn. I have been taught or absorbed somewhere to leave a few ears on the corn to cover the kernels. I find that having the ears on while boiling them help hold in the juice, and keep the kernels fresh longer. I also have found that when the corn is boiled stark naked, the kernels will wrinkle faster if not consumed right away. But there is always exceptions...

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #104

1) How do you prepare corn for cooking?

2) What do you like to eat corn with? (butter, other food?)

  1. I cooked them naked if boiling but left a few outer layer on if we grilled them.

So far the cheapest are 5 for 1 dollar around here that I saw.

  3. We have corn today :-), and they are stark-naked! I don't know why but never keep any cover on. Your point makes sense how the kernels turned wrinkles very fast though.

I love butter on my corn, and usually eating it with meat/poultry!

  4. Hi Amanda ~~ I will come back with my big meal recipe.
For now you can have my microwave prep recipe. :)
    1. Shuck the corn
    2. Break the ears in half
    3. Place in the microwave on a plate with the ears standing up
    4. Cook on high for one or two minutes per ear. Experimenting on this will help. I do one ear, two halves, for one minute; stop; then do another minute.
    5. Butter, salt and pepper, and EAT!!!

  5. I normally cook them naked and boil them in soup. They will be shredded for the kids after cooking so it's easier for them to eat.

  6. Four for a dollar was the best price I saw this summer. We like them grilled and I leave most of the husk, or ears, on for that. When I do boil corn it is naked.

I like corn as is without the butter or anything else. I love the sweet taste.

  7. We don't eat corn too often here, but I love corn on the cob which I preferred boiled and served with butter & salt. If it's already off the cob (frozen) then I just zap it in the microwave with a little butter and salt. Thanks for hosting!

    1. True, most of our corn is frozen too, and zapped in the microwave. I love the simplicity of it.

  8. Ever since seeing the tip on Pinterest, I just pop mine in the microwave for about 7 minutes each with the husk and all on. Then, I chop off one end and squeeze the corn right out. There are never any of those silky strands attached either doing it this way. The corn stays nice and crisp, then I soak mine in butter. YUM!

    1. I don't roast them or grill them or microwave them, so I will definitely try to cook the corn this way and see how I do.

  11. I just boil the corn still with the leaves or ears. Sometimes, we have them as viand. We grate the corn then add some squash flowers and moringa. my sister's favorite. :)
