Grow Dragon Fruit Tree to Produce Fruit Thursday Two Questions #98

My Dragon Fruit Experience
I feel most at peace when I am gardening. I love to plant and watch them grow, nurse them until they flourish.

In 2009, my brother brought with him a bunch of  Dragon Fruit stalks / plant from the state of Texas. At the time they looked like stalks of cacti. Nevertheless, we split the bunch and I took three stalks for myself.

I planted the Dragon Fruit stalks in a pot and set the pot where there is most sun in my backyard. Dragon Fruit plants / shrubs like a lot of sun and heat. Besides remembering to water them every few months, I didn't really tend to them like I do other plants.

It has been a few years since, and around the fourth of July, I saw a flower starting to come out. I was ecstatic, and got right to researching about what the Dragon Fruit flower looks like, and what I can expect after it has flowered. I had never seen one before.

But, after a few minutes of flipping through some photos and reading, I was disappointed to find out that the Dragon Fruit flowers only bloom at night, then wilt immediately by morning. Knowing this, I know I will never get to see the first flower bloom.

This past weekend, I went to the pot to see about pulling off the dead flower, to my surprise, I saw something else that made me extremely happy and hopeful. The happiness was so innocent, so abundant, it flowed all over me. No one can take away this type of happiness, but the plant. It almost cannot disappoint unless it gets destroyed by some thing beyond me.

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #98

  6. I think we all enjoy seeing the product of a plant we have planted and watched over. For many of us it is a joyful experience.

I tried dragon fruit once in a restaurant. It was okay but not all that exciting.

    1. That sounds about right how you feel about the taste. There are a lot of dragon fruits that taste "okay." It is hard to find the perfect dragon fruit with sweetness and great texture.

  7. I agree with IcyBC, your happiness is in seeing what you've nutured. I think this is why I like my container-style gardening. Of course, I haven't done this in a few years, but I do recall how estatic I was to see the first fruits of my labor.

I have not ever eaten a dragon fruit before. You'll have to tell me what it tastes like!

    Thanks for hosting, my friend!

    1. I think dragon fruit looks a lot prettier than the way they taste. The perfect dragon fruit of course tastes great...but it is hard to find the perfect one.
I would say that the dragon fruit tastes like hummm, a cool light jelly, but not a soft jellie, it is more on the crunch side.
