Thursday Two Questions #82 - Older and Tougher

Each year I am getting tougher crankier.
I am wondering if it is because time seems to fly by. When I go to work it felt as if I just came in a couple of hours ago, and already it is time to pack-up for the trip home. Monday came, and next thing I know, it's Thursday.

A week is like three days to me now. How is it possible that I am writing another Thursday Two Questions post already?

Because time is of essence, I don't want to waste my time on things that doesn't make sense to me. Whether it be a ridiculous issue that I am faced with, or a person that is in need of psychiatric help, I either walk away or just brush it off. I don't have time to not like anything anymore. Is this the reason why some seniors get branded as cranky as they age? Because they realized that they don't have time to put-up with things anymore?

I hope everyone had a nice Easter!

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions:
1) What do you think causes some seniors to be so cranky and tough?
2) What about you, are you more pleasant or tough as you get older?

  1. Amanda, good post. I don't have a blog post up for the meme today so I'll just comment.

I think for most seniors, it's not so much that they are cranky, though some are :), I think that as we get older we tend to speak our mind and do what we want without caring about what other people think. By doing that we come off as tough.

I know for me, when I was younger I always cared about what others thought so I kept things inside and didn't show how I really felt. Now, I don't care what anyone thinks. I speak my mind and do what I want and I'm sure that does come off as being tough to some people.

See what happens when ya get old like me? :)

    1. I think you are right Jo, I am tough because I just don't have time to beat around the bush anymore. It's such a wasted opportunity.
I kinda like myself getting old, not my body though...darn. Thanks for your comment.

  2. They get cranky as they are fed up with live in general I guess or are personally very bossy and expect things to go their way. I do know some who are not cranky. I hope I am more pleasant when I'm older.

    1. Me too, I am trying to watch myself everyday, it's not easy though- sometimes it seemed as if I keep running into opportunities that brings out more of my crankiness. smiles.

  3. Amanda, I am in some realms a senior, in other I am quickly approaching. I cannot answer for others but think they may have become disappointed in how quickly time has flown and how many things they did not accomplish??

I am less trusting. I have been burned so many many times, but I am still just as courteous.

    1. Yes, I can see you walking off Betchai...It's just too much of an effort to "win" and really we get nothing out of it.

  5. Some elderly are just naturally mean people, and not just by aging. I have known people who are suffering in pain that are very sweet while others just love to be mean!

For me, as I grow older, I'm calmer :-)

    1. Thank god for those of us that are calmer and less hyper. I like my life more peaceful for sure.

  6. I think it's depending on the personality of individual to be crankier or not. Personally, I find that I grew softer and less hyper as I age. I seem to let go more of things, and less confrontation.

  7. I wonder if poor health causes elderly people to be cranky. I think if you have a poor dispostion then complications with age only aggrevate your crankiness more. I know old folks who aren't well, but they someone hide how they feel and not unkind. I just think about how it's not much fun to feel unwell and you know the elderly have more days like this than others.

Hmm, I don't know if I've changed much over the years. I'm such an easy going person. This really is a question that would be best answered by those who are around me a lot. lol

    1. True...I would say- my family sees me so differently, I am afraid to ask sometimes. ah, what the heck...I hear them and then erase immediately- unless it is good, I keep those and repeat them...lol

  8. Amanda, I was sure I left my link and comment yesterday, but do not see it. Perhaps my Mozilla FF crashed again. It does it so often and randomly! I do not believe I have become more tough, but perhaps more skeptical. When you live awhile on this earth, you see more and begin to smell a scam... lol I know some seniors who do get a little disappointed and bitter. It is sad.

  9. Oh, I LOVE this week's question and post! I never thought about it this way, but yes, it makes sense that this could be one reason people get crankier with age! Of course, the opposite response is gratitude - being grateful they've been given another day! I guess it all depends on one's perspective!

I think that as I get older I am a combination of both. I don't tolerate as much nonsense from people as I used to (I've grown more assertive with age) - at the same time, I've also developed more patience - it really depends on the situation - I guess you could say I've grown more discerning and wiser!

Have a wonderful week! Come share a "surprise" with us at Friendship Friday!

  10. Amanda, I love your phrase, "some seniors get branded as cranky"! :)

My answer to this excellent question is that yes, some really do get cranky but I don't know for sure why. I think the school of hard knocks might be winning with them.

Myself? I think I am getting more mellow and laid back than ever. I have made peace with the Lord and also have done everything on my bucket list that is necessary for happiness.

I am glad that you got a week off. People need that. Summer vacation was the best part of my teaching job! Would you believe that? It made up for fairly low teachers' pay.

    1. Cool. I like that you are getting more mellow. A teacher's schedule is the best...lots of holidays.

  11. I think I'm mellowing out as I get older. I also seem to get anxious a lot more easily. I hope this will pass and that it's not a permanent state of me getting older. It's a bit worrying.

I think older people allow themselves to grow cranky because they're unsatisfied with what they've achieved in life. Maybe they haven't met their goals and they think it's now too late to do anything about it? Me, I'd rather think of the things I have been able to achieve despite the hard start I had in life.

    1. Yes, I can see that in a senior, not happy with their achievements. As the time draws closer, it gets worst I think. Until they realize nothing matters but the here and now.

  12. Interesting question.

I'm not sure most seniors are cranky. I think they just reach the point where they don't put up with bullpoo any more and just let it hang, slide, or slap.

    2. As I get older. I am getting bolder where I can defend myself and also not put up with bullpoo. I still care too much, but I"m getting there. :)
