Delicate Pink Gladiolus

When I first saw the pink gladiolus flowers, I was so taken by them that I bought some bulbs to plant in my front yard. They have since multiplied into many other bulbs and been one of the most rewarding purchases. Do you think plants have self defense tactics? I believe they do. They have a way of preserving themselves in harsh climates, and know when it is safe to show themselves.

One day last week I was outside checking on the front yard because we had so much rain and storms that the garden took quite a beating. I looked at the delicate pink gladiolus that I planted and saw that they were all nubs, but I also saw a bunch of round things that looked like nuts around one gladiolus. Curiously I brushed aside the dirt to see what was going on. Come to find out, the gladiolus bulb was multiplying like crazy. There must have been about 50 -60 little round bulbs, tiny like the tips of my finger just growing right off the main bulb. There were so many of them they looked like seeds. I have never seen anything so thriving like it.

I harvested some bulbs and brought them inside. I left them in a tray and meant to plant them as soon as possible. I finally had a chance to put them in a pot after a few weeks. I don’t think they will survive since I didn't get to plant them sooner. But I will let you know if any of them survive. I should have taken some photos of the propagated bulbs as they were quite a site, but I am really not camera happy, and wished I was more so.

Updated: 12/05/13 - Yes they did survive! The Gladiolus have taken over all the hot spots in the garden front and back! And the pots are never bare.

Thanks for stopping by today.

  10. I have a friend whose 94 year old Father plants an acre of bulbs each year of Gladiolas and tends them throughout the summer and then sells them and gives them away to family and friends. They are beautiful flowers to see growing in such a big expanse.
