Here Chickadee - Chickadee

To the left is the chicken coop. Not many of us knew, but the chickens do not like to be petted. They will let you know in a loud way not to touch them. Our niece Jordan, is an exception. In the pictures below, Jordan demonstrated the art of luring the chickens to her. She is the only one out of all of us who succeeded.

The benefit of raising your own chicken? The freshest eggs, which can be seen obviously once cooked than the eggs you would get from the supermarkets. We learned that the eggs we consumed normally have already been around for at least a month before they even hit the grocery stores. For people who are fanatic about organic stuff, the chicken coop seemed to be an easy enough project to maintain. I even saw some modern ones on Wikipedia, they just require some straws and loose material, with an in and out entry and you're there. What-ever, I think raising chicken is a lot of work, for now I will just settle for the eggs I get in the stores.

I haven't been this close to any chicken since I was about Jordon age now, so seeing them brought back some memories of when my dad used to take us to his farm on the weekends. It was the most tiring trips, but a lot of fun. I remember it was fun, because I didn't have to do anything, but just hung out and asked for this and that. I remember it was tiring because I would fall asleep on the way home, which would be late in the afternoon. I only remember bits and pieces, but what kid wouldn't have fun just hanging out on the farm where there are so many animals and natural food?

Thanks for stopping by today.

  1. We raised chickens when I was a small child. They followed us around and ate from our hands. My friend Jeannie's chickens are friendly too. They have no problem coming right up to us when we eat outside. A chicken will definitely pick your yard free of insects and fertilize your flowers. lol

  2. My grandpa bought us a little chick when we were little, just us Judy mentioned, it followed us around the house, but when it became a bit bigger, my mom placed it in the cage because it leaves droppings everywhere...hehe..

  3. Petting a chicken? I can't even go near one because I am scared that it will attack me. hahahaha. but it is true that there are lots of benefits of having or raising your own chicken. My dad raised some before and we feasted on chicken for 2 months... I never laid eye on any chicken for the whole year after that. And with the egg laying chicken, our neighbor had some and they would go to our backyard and would lay their eggs there unknown to our neighbor. wink* so we have fresh eggs for breakfast. hey, we didn't steal it... it was a gift. hahahaha

  5. Oh when I was a child we use to have to take care of the chickens. I feared the chickens. They only liked me when I fed them :) I guess because I was the one being sent to take their warm eggs from under them in the mornings? :)

I've been pecked by many a hen.

But I loved the fresh eggs! And we had to kill our own meat too.

It's a lot of work to raise them, ensure they aren't killed by beasts etc, but...well I wish my kids had that experience on a farm with things like this.

Glad your kids got to enjoy this experience.

  9. We also had chickens when I was a child. I never really bothered petting them because they were raised for eggs and meat eventually. We were poor so never had the luxury of having chickens just for petting as many people do these days. Some people are even horrified if you say you eat your chickens.

  10. It seems like everyone is raising chickens these days! I love the idea, but it would be too much work for me. So Jordan is the 'chicken whisperer'? What is her secret???

  11. We have chickens and roosters in our yard but they are not ours. They like the back yard of our old house and the roosters are kind of mean. We live in the city limits! Jordon is very patient to get the chickens to come to her. Thanks for visiting me and the schrooms. olive♥
